Embark on an extraordinary journey with the Alternative Break Program at IU! ABP offers students an unparalleled opportunity to engage deeply with social issues on both a global and local scale. Through our service-learning trips, participants connect with peers who share a commitment to positive change, learning about the complexities of social challenges and the profound impact of their contributions.

Scheduled during Indiana University's breaks — Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring — these trips are designed as a way to work with like-minded students and make profound engagements with real-world issues. Join us, and discover how you can contribute to meaningful change one trip at a time!

What is the Alternative Break Program (ABP)?

ABP is an organization that coordinates service projects for college students during Thanksgiving, Spring, and Winter breaks. These projects take place both in the United States and internationally, providing students with opportunities to make a positive impact on communities.

What is service learning?

Service learning combines community service with academic learning. It provides students with hands-on experiences that enhance their understanding of real-world issues and community needs, fostering a deeper connection between classroom learning and practical engagement.

How can I get involved in ABP?

To get involved with ABP, you can now apply for our service-learning trips on the apply now tab during the application period beginning August 20. Keep an eye on our website and social media for announcements and application details.

Who is eligible to participate in ABP?

ABP is open to all Indiana University students who are passionate about engaging in service and learning experiences that contribute to meaningful community development, you do not need to be in the Kelley School of Business to join!

What types of service projects are available?

We offer a diverse range of service projects, both domestic and international. These projects cover various areas, from community development and prison reform to environmental conservation and ocean pollution cleanup, addressing important social issues. How long do the service trips last?

Each trip lasts one week including 5 days of service and 2 days of travel, aligning with Indiana University's breaks.

Do I need previous service experience to join ABP?

No, previous service experience is not required. ABP welcomes students with a wide range of backgrounds and interests, and our projects are designed to be accessible to all.

What kind of impact do ABP projects have?

ABP projects are designed to have a lasting impact on the communities we serve. We collaborate closely with local partners to ensure our projects address real needs and contribute positively to community development. We extend our impact through "Beyond the Break" events, collaborating with local non-profits on the same issues we address during our service-learning trips.

Can I go on more than 1 trip?

Yes, you can absolutely participate in multiple service-learning trips! We encourage students to engage in diverse experiences and contribute to various communities. Each trip offers unique opportunities for growth and impact.

What does being a Site Leader mean?

A Site Leader is a student who takes on a leadership role during service trips. They play a vital role in planning activities, coordinating schedules with partner organizations, facilitating group discussions, and ensuring a positive and impactful experience for all participants.

What other initiatives does ABP do outside of the service-learning trips?

In addition to service trips, ABP is involved in various initiatives. Our Education Committee develops educational programming related to service trips, enhancing participants' understanding of the social issues they engage with. Our "Beyond the Break" events extend our impact to Bloomington through collaborations with local non-profits. We also organize events such as prison reform speakers to raise awareness about critical issues.
